News: TAG Heuer Launches Carrera Porsche Limited Editions
This month sees the fiftieth anniversary of the Porsche Carrera RS 2.7, a motoring icon launched at the 1972 Paris Motor Show.
Nine years earlier, in 1963, TAG Heuer launched its own icon, the Carrera watch, a racing chronograph that, like its Porsche namesake, is still going strong.
It’s only natural, then, that the two brands have collaborated on two special editions of the model that pay tribute to that distinctive marque—for many years the crowning glory of the German car industry.
The two models, one in steel and one in rose gold, encapsulate everything that made the Carrera such a coveted sports car and are satisfyingly different to the multitude of existing Carrera watches out there.
Aside from the colour combinations—blue and white for the steel version and red and white for the rose gold one—there’s the crisp white opaline dial with tri-compax layout. The chronograph subdials feature an “azurage” finish for added texture and the small seconds hand at 6 o’clock passes over a discreet date aperture. The distinctive Carrera logo text below 12 o’clock is the very same kind that will be familiar to Porsche fans the world over.
TAG Heuer has also splashed this stylised logo on the case-band, albeit engraved rather than laser-etched on the rose gold model.
The blue and white edition in steel, limited to 500 pieces, is obviously cheaper at $7,750, while the red and white edition in rose gold is priced at $22,550 and is even rarer, with just 250 pieces up for grabs.
Both are powered by the Heuer 02 self-winding calibre which can be viewed through the open caseback. The steel version comes with a matching bracelet and a NATO-style Porsche-branded strap, but TAG Heuer has aptly paired the pricier version with a vivid red alligator strap (a matching rose gold bracelet, pushing the price up further, would perhaps have been a step too far for even the most ardent collector of the brand).
