Introduced in 2008, the Rolex Deepsea pays homage to the brand’s legacy of deep-sea exploration. It's a watch designed for the extremes, capable of withstanding intense depths and pressure, making it an indispensable tool for professional divers. The Deepsea's lineage can be traced back to the iconic Rolex Sea-Dweller, a product of the brand's collaboration with COMEX (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertises).


The Rolex Deepsea sets itself apart with an impressive water resistance of up to 3,900 metres. This is achieved through the Ringlock System—a patented case architecture developed by Rolex that allows it to resist the colossal pressure exerted by water at extreme depths. This, combined with the helium escape valve, ensures the watch's equilibrium is maintained during decompression.


The Deepsea's innovative technology sets it apart from the competition. Its helium escape valve enables it to endure extreme pressures during deep-sea diving. This valve ensures that any accumulated helium can safely escape without compromising the watch's structural integrity. Additionally, the Deepsea features a Triplock winding crown, providing an extra layer of protection against water intrusion. These technological advancements make the Rolex Deepsea a reliable companion for even the most demanding underwater adventures.

In 2012, Rolex developed an experimental watch, the Deepsea Challenge. It was purpose-built to accompany film director and diver, James Cameron, on his voyage to the bottom of the Mariana Trench—the deepest oceanic trench on the planet. This prototype model took inspiration from the original Deepsea but Rolex maximised the water resistance to a whopping 12,000 metres.


Developed and manufactured by Rolex in only a few weeks, this watch was designed to resist the pressure found in the deepest reaches of the oceans. Cameron, in his submersible—the Deepsea Challenger—successfully descended 10,908 metres to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench, with the watch attached to the sub’s robotic arm. It was on this dive that Cameron broke records, becoming the first solo diver to reach these depths.


To commemorate this momentous dive, the Crown released the Deepsea D-Blue edition in 2014—aka, the “James Cameron” Deepsea. This model boasts a graduated dial that shifts from a deep blue to black, reminiscent of the ocean’s twilight zone, as the last trickle of light from the surface disappears into the abyss.


Rolex followed this in 2022 with the release of the titanium Deepsea Challenge, Rolex’s largest watch with a case size of 50mm, six millimetres more than the Deepsea model.
